High-Density LiDAR Capture
Precision LiDAR Surveys for Topographic, Engineering, Infrastructure and Environmental Projects
At LiDAR Drone Australia, we provide professional high-density drone LiDAR capture and mapping services for projects where accurate, detailed and reliable spatial information is essential.
Our LiDAR surveys are designed to provide engineers, surveyors, environmental consultants, planners, civil contractors and project managers with a highly detailed three-dimensional representation of the terrain, vegetation, structures and surrounding environment.
From relatively small development sites through to large infrastructure corridors and environmentally sensitive areas, our focus is straightforward: capture quality data, understand the requirements of the project, and provide useful deliverables that our clients can confidently work with.
High-Density LiDAR — More Detail Where It Matters
LiDAR — Light Detection and Ranging — uses precisely measured laser pulses to create millions of individual three-dimensional points across a survey area.
By operating our LiDAR systems from drones, we can capture extremely dense point-cloud data efficiently and from perspectives that can be difficult, costly or unsafe to obtain using conventional ground-based methods.
High-density capture is particularly valuable where a project requires detailed representation of:
-
Natural ground and changing terrain
-
Embankments, cuttings and batters
-
Drainage channels and waterways
-
Roads, rail and infrastructure corridors
-
Buildings and structures
-
Vegetation and tree canopy
-
Exposed rock and geological features
-
Stockpiles and earthworks
-
Difficult or inaccessible terrain
-
Environmentally sensitive areas
The density of the captured point cloud provides considerably more information than simply recording spot heights. It creates a detailed three-dimensional record of the site that can be classified, measured, modelled and analysed for a wide range of applications.
Topographic LiDAR Surveys
Drone LiDAR is particularly effective for topographic and terrain mapping, especially across sites containing vegetation, steep terrain or areas that are difficult to access safely on foot.
Multiple laser returns can provide information from different levels of the vegetation structure and, where sufficient openings exist within the canopy, record points from the underlying ground surface.
Following processing and classification, ground points can be separated from vegetation and other features to produce detailed terrain information for applications including:
-
Topographic mapping
-
Digital Terrain Models (DTM)
-
Digital Surface Models (DSM)
-
Contour generation
-
Drainage and catchment assessment
-
Preliminary design
-
Earthworks planning
-
Volumetric analysis
-
Site investigation and feasibility studies
For many projects, LiDAR provides an efficient way of obtaining a detailed overview of an entire site while reducing the amount of time personnel need to spend working across difficult terrain.
Engineering and Civil Projects
Reliable spatial data is fundamental to good engineering and design.
Our high-density LiDAR capture can provide engineering teams with detailed existing-condition information at the early stages of a project, during construction, or as part of ongoing asset and site monitoring.
Applications include:
-
Road and highway projects
-
Subdivisions and land development
-
Civil construction
-
Bridge and crossing investigations
-
Drainage infrastructure
-
Earthworks
-
Cut-and-fill assessment
-
Corridor surveys
-
Site access planning
-
Design and feasibility investigations
-
Construction progress surveys
-
Existing-condition documentation
LiDAR data can also complement conventional survey methods, allowing large quantities of spatial information to be collected efficiently while traditional surveying is concentrated on areas requiring specific control, verification or cadastral information.
Infrastructure and Corridor LiDAR
Infrastructure projects frequently extend over large areas and can include steep slopes, vegetation, traffic hazards, waterways and restricted-access locations.
Drone-based LiDAR provides an effective method of capturing these environments while reducing the requirement for survey personnel to physically access every part of the project corridor.
Our LiDAR services can support projects involving:
-
Roads and highways
-
Detailed terrain, drainage, embankment, cutting and surrounding corridor information.
-
Rail corridors
-
High-density capture of terrain, vegetation and infrastructure environments.
-
Powerline and utility corridors
-
Three-dimensional mapping of terrain, vegetation and surrounding assets to support planning, inspection and vegetation assessment.
-
Pipelines and linear infrastructure
-
Terrain and corridor mapping for route investigation, design, construction and environmental assessment.
-
Water and drainage infrastructure
-
Detailed terrain information for waterways, channels, flood-prone areas and drainage investigations.
Environmental LiDAR Surveys
One of the major strengths of LiDAR is its ability to capture both the landscape and its vegetation structure in three dimensions.
For environmental projects, this provides information that cannot always be clearly interpreted from conventional aerial photography alone.
High-density LiDAR can assist with:
-
Vegetation mapping
-
Canopy height analysis
-
Terrain beneath vegetation
-
Riparian corridor assessment
-
Wetland and waterway mapping
-
Habitat investigations
-
Bushland management
-
Erosion assessment
-
Environmental impact investigations
-
Rehabilitation monitoring
-
Forestry and vegetation studies
-
Flood and catchment modelling
The resulting point cloud provides a permanent three-dimensional dataset that can be revisited as project requirements develop.
Working in Difficult and Inaccessible Terrain
Some of the greatest benefits of drone LiDAR become apparent on sites where traditional surveying is challenging.
Dense vegetation, steep slopes, waterways, unstable ground, active construction sites and remote locations can make conventional data collection slow, difficult and potentially hazardous.
A drone allows significant portions of these areas to be surveyed remotely, reducing unnecessary exposure of personnel while still capturing detailed spatial information.
This does not mean LiDAR replaces every aspect of traditional surveying. Rather, it can be an extremely effective tool used alongside established surveying techniques to improve coverage, efficiency, safety and the overall amount of information available to the project team.
LiDAR Deliverables
Every project is different, and we can tailor the processing and deliverables to suit the intended application.
Depending on project requirements, deliverables may include:
-
High-density georeferenced LiDAR point clouds
-
LAS / LAZ point-cloud files
-
Classified point clouds
-
Ground-classified point clouds
-
Digital Terrain Models
-
Digital Surface Models
-
Contours
-
Hillshade models
-
Orthophotography where captured as part of the survey
-
3D site models
-
Cross-sections and profiles
-
CAD-compatible data
-
GIS-compatible datasets
-
Site imagery and supporting documentation
Where appropriate, we can work with your surveyor, engineer, environmental consultant or project team to ensure the data is supplied in a format that integrates effectively with the next stage of the project.
Data Quality Starts With the Capture
A successful LiDAR survey involves considerably more than simply flying a drone over a site.
Flight altitude, speed, flight-line spacing, overlap, terrain, vegetation density, satellite geometry, control, LiDAR configuration and the required final deliverables all influence the way a project should be captured.
We assess these factors during project planning so that the flight is designed around the required outcome, rather than applying the same capture method to every site.
For projects requiring particularly detailed information, flight parameters can be adjusted to increase point density and coverage in areas where additional detail is important.
